Murco Petroleum
Murco Petroleum Limited is the U.K. downstream subsidiary of Murphy Oil Corporation of the U.S.A.
Murco was established in the U.K. by Murphy Oil Corporation in 1960. The purchase of an ocean fed oil terminal at Grays in Essex was followed, shortly afterwards, by the development of rail fed terminals at Bedworth, Warwickshire and Theale, Berkshire to supply the expanding Murco and EP service station chains.
In 1981 the company took an effective 30% interest in the (then) Amoco oil refinery in Milford Haven, Wales and in 1990 the final link in the supply chain was added with the opening of the Westerleigh terminal near Bristol.
Today these facilities supply over 160 company owned and 260 independently owned service stations in addition to a growing number of commercial customers.
In 1996 Murco developed the neighbourhood and rural focus of its network through an alliance with Costcutter Supermarkets. To date there are well over 100 Murco/Costcutter outlets varying in size from 500 to 2,000 square feet and offering their customers up to 4,000 product lines with an emphasis on fresh and chilled products.
