Doha: Mowasalat runs green with Woqod

Posted / Last update: 30-12-2009

Some 50 road taxis today run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Qatar, as part of the government’s drive to reduce emissions from its public service vehicles

Working closely with Mowasalat, Qatar Fuel (Woqod) has built a LPG fueling station in Mowasalat’s premises near the industrial area. Woqod hopes to announce with Mowasalat an extension of this service to more taxis soon. In addition, LPG fueling will be made available at selected Woqod service stations through 2010.

Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, H E Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah told reporters at the inauguration of Woqod’s new LPG filling and distribution plant that LPG use for public transportation will be further promoted. He said maybe in the future the use of LPG could be expanded to individual vehicles of the general public and LPG dispensers will be installed at Woqod petrol stations with designs being worked out.

Speaking about Woqod’s expansion, Al Attiyah said that Woqod was in discussions with Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA) to provide more locations for petrol stations. “We are planning to set up four to five Woqod petrol stations on Salwa Road. Besides, Al Shamal will also need five stations especially after the completion of the high way. We have a plan to build more than 100 stations in the coming five years. Currently there are four or five stations under construction and this is not enough,” he said.

He added that Qatar has developed very dramatically and requires more petrol stations. “Woqod stations are of high standard with high level of safety. We are discussing with different countries to provide Woqod’s services to them, because Woqod has become a very experienced company.

Mohammed Turki Al Sobai, Woqod’s Vice Chairman and Managing Director said Woqod has signed a two-year contract with Mowasalat to use LPG in 50 taxis and past this period of two years Mowasalat would judge whether to expand and continue using the fuel. “We have already installed an LPG filling station at Karwa premises,” he said. Mark Vidler, General Manager for Marketing at Woqod said Woqod was offering companies and individuals the opportunity to use cleaner fuels.
