Bring your recyclables to Adnoc
Recycling centres will soon be installed at petrol stations across the capital. Adnoc informed that bins for paper, plastics and metal waste would be installed in at least 10 service stations later this year
The aim is to make the practice much more convenient for families who have complained about a lack of recycling facilities in the capital.
“Petrol stations are an ideal place to have collection points,” said Craig Halgreen, the vice president of Global Communications for Borouge, which has been working with Adnoc on the project. “It makes a lot of sense when you have a plastic producer and someone with lots of locations throughout the UAE like Adnoc team up and provide a point of collection and also segregation.”
Depending on the success of the pilot project, he added, the programme could be expanded. “This is the first stage in trying to create these collection points, and we could eventually get extensive coverage.”
Ahmed Bulbulia, a Canadian who teaches at Zayed University, said he hoped the idea would also encourage his neighbours in Khalifa City A to get rid of household waste responsibly. Mr Bulbulia, 45, currently does a weekly recycling drop-off run to spots such as Spinneys in Khalidiya and the British Club.
By comparison, the nearest Adnoc station is “only about a minute away” from his home. “I’ll definitely support it, and I think everyone we work with would really support that,” Mr Bulbulia said.
Aspen Aman, a 46-year-old American, was disappointed the scheme would not extend to Dubai, which does not have Adnoc stations. “I have four bags of recyclables in my car right now,” she said. “I’d have to go past Jebel Ali to hit an Adnoc.”
