UK: Asda says sales fell in 2014; buys 15 fuel stations

Retailer Asda said on February 19 that it has purchased 15 fuel stations from Rontec Ltd as part of its plans to open as many as 100 stand-alone stations within the next three years. It also separately said sales fell last year compared with 2013.

“The acquisition of the 15 new sites increases access to Asda and is the latest step in Asda’s five year strategy to redefine value retailing and respond directly to the changing retail landscape,” the company said in a release published in its press center.

The company released the information as it reported on the same day its fourth quarter and full year financial results for 2014, posting a 1% fall in like-for-like sales for the year to 31st December and a 2.6% fall in the 12 weeks to 4th January, in a quarter when the retail market as a whole slowed significantly, it said.
