Explosion in fuel station in Ghana may have killed 100 people

An explosion of a fuel station in Accra, Ghana, which happened at a time when a large group of people was taking refuge there because of a flood, may have killed more than 100 people, the International Business Times online version said in a story signed by reporter Mugdha Variyar on June 4.

Last update:

The explosion was apparently caused by a fuel leak during the storm and occurred as people were taking shelter from heavy rains, according to the report.  The fuel was pushed by the flood towards a fire, causing the explosion, according to the report.

The report cited Reuters news agency saying at least 78 people had been confirmed dead while the search continued.

Photographs available in the newspaper’s website show the remains of burnt tanker trucks and other vehicles in addition to nearly total structural damage.
