India inaugurates solar-powered hydrogen fuel station

India has seen the inauguration of a solar-powered hydrogen fuel station in a location near Delhi which generates the power from solar energy via an electrolyzer, according to a June press release available in PRNewswires.

The station was built to serve public transportation buses and is part of a program put in place by Indian government institutions related to alternative energy.

“This project is an important, progressive step towards unlocking the potential of hydrogen as sustainable transportation fuel and alternative energy source, not just for India but the rest of the world,” said Ravi Subramanian, Asia Business Development Manager for Hydrogen Energy Systems at Air Products.

With the opening, Air Products now has worked in three hydrogen stations operating in India. One of them, opened in 2012 in New Delhi, helps fuel local rickshaws with hydrogen. Another is a station located south of New Delhi which supplies a mix of hydrogen and compressed natural gas.

Other installations by the company for hydrogen facilities have been in Australia, Japan as well as in the United Kingdom. In the UK, the facility is located at the Sainsbury’s stores, according to the release it is reportedly the first supermarket-hosted hydrogen station in the United Kingdom.
