Australia: Queensland to develop “super highway” for electric vehicles

Australia's Queensland state is planning the construction of an “electric super highway” adapted to the needs of electric vehicles (EVs).

Last update:

The first step in the innovative plan is the development in Townsville of Australia´s first service station for fast-charging electric vehicles using solar energy, the State Government has announced.

After the opening of the first station, other charging stations will be progressively constructed along the 1,600 km Bruce Highway, reported Business Insider.

“Our vision is for this to be the start of an ‘electric super highway’ by facilitating fast-charging service locations for drivers travelling up and down the length of Queensland,” said Coralee O’Rourke, minister assisting the premier of North Queensland.

Diesel and unleaded drivers will also be able to refuel at traditional pumps, alongside users of electric vehicles.

“Up to two electric vehicles could charge at the same time, with an expected average charge time of 15 to 30 minutes,” O’Rourke said.

The Queensaland minister also spoke about the heavy costs retailers had to face when “pioneering new technology”, explaining that Ergon Energy would offer a 100% lease on solar panels, while the Economic Development Queensland would provide EV charging equipment leases for operators.

“Petrol station businesses must accommodate technological change to remain viable. By incorporating solar facilities into the design of service stations, annual business costs can be reduced,” said Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association CEO Mark McKenzie.
