Crews contain 1,000 gallon fuel leak in Vermont gas station
Crews from the State of Vermont contained an estimated 1,000 gallon gasoline spill at a Bennington gas station throughout Wednesday.
The spill happened when a 5,000 gallon tanker was filling the underground storage tanks at a Cubby's Convenience Store in Bennington early Wednesday morning. Safety equipment failed to stop the overfill and a 1,000 gallons leaked from the USTs, reported NBC.
Crews from Bennington and nearby towns spent all Wednesday cleaning up the spill. According to the Fire Department, the gasoline did not reach the sewer system or the Papillon Creek, therefore water supplies were not affected.
Fire Department said staff were unsure why safety equipment did not respond to the overfill, and that an operator error was the most probable cause. Nobody was injured as a result of the petroleum spill.
