Bottled water to dominate future beverage market
Bottled water will outsell sodas by 2017, becoming the bestselling beverage in the c-store market, according to forecast by industry analyst Beverage Marketing Corp.
Although people in the U.S. can generally access free drinkable tap-water, the bottled mineral water is a booming product with sales growing by 7% last year, reported The Wall Street Journal.
Greater awareness of the benefits from drinking water, as well as the disadvantages from consuming sugar-carbonized drinks like sodas, have doubled bottled-water consumption from 2000 to 2014, with the U.S. drinking 34.02 gallons per capita, up from 16.74 gallons.
On the other hand, Soda has suffered a slump in consumption, falling from 53.17 gallons in 2000 to 39.92 gallons in 2014, according to Beverage Marketing.
The surge in bottled-water sales has boosted companies such as Nestlé SA, which owns the brands Pure Life and Poland Spring, to become market leader, with the Swiss-based company currently the No. 3 corporation in the U.S. non-alcoholic beverages market.
