Estonia's public transport turns to bio-methane

Estonia will be making major investment in the bio-methane market and infrastructure, according to the country's Economy and Infrastructure Minister Kristen Michal.

Last update:

The government signed a bill on September 21 to support the production of bio-methane, building a filling station chain and use of bio-methane in public transport, reported The Baltic Course.

"Fuel produced from local raw materials is essential to ensure Estonia's energy independence and use of bio-methane in public transport will bring cleaner air in cities, where public transport is transferred to more environment-friendly fuel," said Michal.

The government aims at increasing the use of renewable energy in the public transport sector to 10% by the year 2020. The initiative will start by fomenting the use of bio-methane for buses operating in Estonia´s major cities.

According to Postimees, Estonia plans to open at least 20 biogas filling stations in the near future.
