The payment system, named Automatric, charges through the license plate previously registered in the system’s website automatric.com.

It was created by Auchan’s subsidiary and financial company Oney España and currently installed at 60 gas stations in Spain and Portugal.

Oney has already signed agreements with independent gas station networks such as Frii and Petroprix and plans to extend the easy-payment system to France, Poland, Hungary, and Italy in 2016 and later on in the United Kingdom and Nordic countries.

The company also aims to partner with petroleum companies and other businesses associated with the use of automobiles like fast food restaurants or parking services.

Automatric, which currently has 35,000 registered users in its initial phase, is compatible to any loyalty rewards program and promises to increase sales up to 4%.

Grouppe Auchan is a French international retail group, which owns popular brands such as Alcampo, Leroy Merlin, Decathlon, Simply, Aki, Norauto y Bricomart.

I really do not understand how this is viable from a security perspective? In the UK in London we have already seen the "cloning" of vehicles (cars of the same make, model and colour with a counterfeit registration plate) in order to avoid paying the congestion charge. Surely similar cloning would be rife if it meant that you could get free fuel!
