Bharat Petroleum intends to bring its surplus refining capacity in India and hydrocarbon assets from Brazil and Mozambique to the African continent and Asian countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

The company’s exploration in Brazil has resulted in sizeable assets while Mozambique can be the world’s third largest gas find.

Its competitor Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), also state-controlled, is already operating retail gas businesses abroad. It operates 150 gas stations in Sri Lanka, through its subsidiary, Lanka IOC, and 17 gas stations run by another subsidiary Indian Oil (Mauritius) (IOML).
