U.S. Representative wants gas station assistance for disabled drivers

American motorists with disabilities could be upon a great coup as United States Representative for Florida David Jolly is requesting all gas stations to offer servicing assistance.

Last update:

Jolly, a Republican who is running for the U.S. Senate this year, filed the Gas Pump Access Act, a bill which “requires all gas stations offering self-service to place a decal on each gas pump with the phone number of the station, so when an individual with a disability pulls up, they can call for assistance."

The new legislation is based on a Hillsborough County ordinance that recently became a Florida law, reported the Tampa Bay.

“The Gas Pump Access Act solves the problem of disabled drivers having to find a way to get the attention of a gas station employee for assistance at the pump,” Jolly said. “Tampa Bay and Florida led the nation with this solution and it’s time the rest of the country follows their lead.”

A number of gas stations already complied with a 1990 federal law, the Americans with Disabilities Act, by which they had to install phone boxes by the dispensers. However, those devices proved very difficult to access for some customers because it meant they had to exit the car.
