English Español Mexico: First non-Pemex gas stations open

After 75 years of industry monopoly, Mexico has its first non-Pemex gas stations up and running.

Last update:

La Gas has opened two new gas stations in Campeche and Mérida, while the Hidrosima franchise has launched a new service station in the City of Mexico, reported El Universal.

At least one more fuelling group will be opening a non-Pemex site this week. Although these fuel stations are not Pemex-braded, the national oil company will still be the sole supplier of fuels.

New fuel group La Gas is formed by a number of Mexican businessmen involved in the fuel retailing business: Corpo Gas, Grupo Enerkom, Hidrosina, Lodemo Red y Corporativo GES.

While Group Hidrosina opened its first site in the City of Mexico, Grupo Eco will be launching in Tijuana this week.

For the first time in 75 years Mexican motorist will be able to pull up at non-Pemex branded gas stations. However, operators will have to wait until 2017 for the liberalization of fuel supply, which is currently in the hands of Pemex.
