"What you see is what you pay" law to end confusing fuel price boards in Queensland

Australia's Queensland government wants petrol stations to display only the full price that the motorists have to pay on their fuel price boards.

The 'what you see is what you pay' regulations ban the display of conditionally discounted prices on fuel price boards, such as those that require a discount voucher or an in-store purchase.

Retailers can still promote discount fuel price schemes but they should not be displayed on the price boards.

“Calls for truth in petrol price advertising has long been a burning issue for motorists," said Treasurer and Acting Energy and Biofuels Minister Curtis Pitt.

Pitt further said: “These reforms have been introduced due to on-going concerns that some motorists may be paying more at the bowser than they were initially led to believe, which is typically when fuel retailers display prices that are only available to motorists who have a discount voucher or make an in-store purchase.”

Petrol stations will have until 31 January 2018 to comply with the new regulations.
