UK: EV charging stations to outnumber petrol stations by 2020, says Nissan

Last update:

The report found that there were 8,472 traditional gas stations in the UK at the end of last year, which is 75% less than the 37,539 recorded 40 years ago. The steady decline is expected to continue and it is likely to fall to under 7,870 by summer 2020, says the report.

The Japanese automaker believes that EV charging locations, on the other hand, will grow from the current 4,100 to around 7,9000 in the next three years.

Comparisons between the number of public charging points and gas station are always to be taken lightly as the space and investment needed for the two are completely different. The numbers offered by Nissan also don´t include private charging stations, which are set to rapidly grow in the coming years.

“As electric vehicle sales take off, the charging infrastructure is keeping pace and paving the way for convenient all-electric driving,” said Edward Jones, EV manager at Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd, to the Guardian.

Many also point to the fact that Nissan is trying to get ahead of the electric vehicle game and is pushing a certain agenda in favour of this technology.
