Pump tampering a widespread practice in Greece

Greek fuel stations are incurring in illegal practices to make a bigger profit, according to Ekathimerini.

Last update:

Illegal practices at gas stations in Greece are increasing due to higher taxation and lack of inspections, causing annual losses of over 20 million Euros for the Greek government.

The majority of fuel station operators are tampering with their pumps giving out less fuel than clients pay for. At the same time, large quantities of industry-use fuel is being sold as autogas, with the former being subject to far lower taxes, according to the mentioned publication.

An industry expert mentioned by Ekathimerini blames these practices on the lack of inspections and warns against fuelling up at the cheapest stations, as they are more likely to be tampering or distributing low quality fuel.
