Japan c-stores to introduce advanced self-checkout by 2025
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will partner with convenience store chains to implement by 2025 an advanced self-checkout system that can read all items in a basket at once, reports The Japan Times.
The move aims to address foreseen labor shortages in the country.
The Japanese government will also support mass production of chips to reduce their cost.
C-store chains are already working on installing self-checkout registers, one of them is Lawson which collaborates with Panasonic in conducting a trial of a robot that can calculate items.
