USA: Gilbarco passes 350 million secure EMV transactions mark

Gilbarco Veeder-Root processed an estimated 350 million secure EMV transactions through March with its Passport point-of-sale (POS) EMV system, as fuel and c-stores across the U.S. continue to migrate to the new chip-enabled POS software.

A day after announcing the acquisition of Orpak Systmes, Gilbarco Veeder-Root showcases its strength in the EMV department of the U.S. convenience and fuel market. Approximately 8,000 locations have upgraded to EMV software, accounting for more than an estimated $2.5 billion in secure transactions.

The transition from legacy magnetic-stripe technology to EMV technology has occurred across a broad range of Gilbarco’s customer base, from national chains to single-store operators, including regional retailers like Champlain Oil Company.

“The introduction of Passport EMV software early in the upgrade cycle allowed us to be a leader in secure chip payments for customers inside the store,” said Bryan Cairns, Vice President, Champlain Oil.

Champlain Oil Company operates more than 40 corporate c-store locations in the northeastern U.S. under the Jiffy Mart brand.

“Given growing consumer expectations around EMV, we expect to see EMV 'turn on' at the fuel dispenser rapidly as well when the software is available later this year,” said Gilbarco’s VP of Marketing for North America, Mark Williams.
