France to ban sales of petrol and diesel cars

France will stop selling petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 as part of Emmanuel Macron's ambitious plan to reduce carbon emissions.

Nicolas Hulot, France´s new environment minister, laid out the plan to make the country carbon neutral by 2050 as part of the Paris Agreements. One of the measures to reduce emissions is a ban on petrol and diesel cars.

Just days after Volvo announced that it will only make fully electric or hybrid card from 2019 onwards, the French government set a deadline petroleum, reports The Independent.

“We are announcing an end to the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040,” said Hulot, adding that the move was a “veritable revolution.”

He also said that the move would be tough on French car manufacturers but that the industry was well prepared to make the switch.

Hulot insisted that the decision was a question of public health policy and an effort to reduce air pollution.
