Mexico: Legislators tell government to be more vigilant with gas stations

Mexico's Permanent Commission of the Union's Congress has urged the Federal Consumer Agency (Profeco) to step up inspections of gas stations with faulty fuel dispensers.

Last update:

Legislators have requested that service stations which have been sanctioned for fuel supply irregularities undergo stricter inspections. They also instructed Profeco to further encourage drivers to report the irregularities they suffer at gas stations.

In the legislative report, they state their concern that irregularities at the stations checked by Profeco not only fail to cease, but increase in number, reports El Universal.

Some of the filling stations still revealed irregularities after being checked twice in the space of 15 months, and continued to function without being shutdown.

The document shows 570 gas stations underwent Profeco checks in the first three months of 2015, while 1,792 sites were inspected in 2014. That is only a fifth of the country´s 11,246 gas station network. Legislators believe it is likely that consumer rights are being infringed in many unchecked sites.
