Inspections crush fraud allegations against fuel retailers

Following Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boiko Borissov's request last week to check gas stations for irregularities, the Ministry of Economy has announced that less than 1% of the retail facilities have been shut down after the checks.

Last update:

After a total of 10,862 pumps were inspected over the weekend only 87 have been shut for having damaged customs seals or revealing discrepancies between the fuel supplied and the fuel paid for.

The campaign follows the country´s Prime Minister´s request to inspect all gas stations after reports of widespread fuel pump fraud.

Opposition parties have claimed this was just a public relations stunt to improve Borissov´s public image ahead of the imminent local elections which take place in October.
