UK: Apple Pay transaction limit increased to £30

Apple Pay and other contactless payment users can now pay up to £30 (USD46) worth of goods, a £10 increase from the original quantity the UK Cards Association had set.

Last update:

The UK Cards Association has raised the upper limit of contactless payments after witnessing the rapid surge in use, with British consumers spending more through touch-to-pay technology in the first six months of the year than in the whole of 2014.

According to Apple Insider, the transaction volume from touchless cards and devices jumped from 287 million pounds in January to 567 million pounds in June, with a six-month total of 2.5 billion pounds.

"The pace of growth we are seeing in contactless is getting ever faster as we rely less and less on cash. Consumers enjoy the speed and convenience of tapping to pay," said Mark Barnett, President of MasterCard UK & Ireland. "We expect this upward trend to persist with consumers continuing to migrate to contactless card payments and increasingly to mobile payments, as we work with partners such as Apple to enable more convenient ways to pay."

Part of that increase is due to the launch of Apple Pay in July, which is accepted in more than 250,000 locations with support from 8 different banks. Owners of iPhones or Apple Watch will now be able to spend up to £30 without entering pins, using cards or paying in cash.
