7-Eleven endorses e-commerce with locker space expansion

7-Eleven Inc. has once again showed its certitude in e-commerce by expanding the number of online pick-up lockers at its North American stores.

In the dispute between shelf space and higher footfall, 7-Eleven has opted for the later with the installation of more lockers. The company has acted on the belief that a larger number of potential customers will increase its sales, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Since the first pilot programme in 2011 with Amazon lockers, 7-Eleven has increased the number of pick-up locations and expanded its partnerships with shipping and e-commerce companies, such as FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc.

According to the WSJ, this could prove to be a risky move for 7-Eleven. The space that the lockers take up is similar to that of a large shelf, limiting the display of a large number of products. However, the Seven & i Holdings Co. subsidiary sees lockers as an opportunity to keep customers coming to their stores in an age of e-commerce and house deliveries.
