First unmanned L-CNG station in Finland with IFSF technology
On November 7, 2016 in Turku, Finland the first L-CNG station in the network of company GASUM was opened. This liquefied-compressed natural gas (L-CNG) station combines LNG (liquefied natural gas) and CNG (compressed natural gas) in one facility and has dispensers for both LNG and CNG vehicles.
The station located at Tuontiväylä, 2 close to the Port of Turku is Finland’s first gas filling station intended for cars, commercial vehicles as well as heavy-duty road vehicles.
What makes this particular station interesting is not only the fact that it is first L-CNG station in the region, but also that it is actually an unmanned site, equipped with Outdoor Payment Terminals (OPT) supplied by Finnish company Finnpos Systems Oy (Tampere, Finland).
The software provided by Finnpos Systems controls communications between OPTs, CNG and LNG pumps, and card payments (OPTs accept major debit/credit cards and Gasum cards) solely via IFSF protocols.
At an L-CNG station, LNG vehicles are fueled with a cryogenic pump moving the LNG from an insulated storage vessel through a dispenser into the vehicle. To produce CNG, the LNG is pumped into a vaporizer that converts it from liquid to gas in a controlled way so that it can be dispensed at the right pressure as CNG. LNG must be stored at -162 degrees Celsius so that it stays in a liquid state.
Finnpos Systems also provides Gasum with cloud-based Head-Office where all the unmanned CNG sites, equipped with Finnpos OPT, are connected – Gasum’s current network consists of 19 sites. In 2017 Finnpos Systems will launch a mobile payment application for Gasum’s customers.
Gasum receives Connecting Europe Facility support to explore the opportunities to construct an LNG/LCNG refueling station network and has plans to build 35 new filling stations during the next ten years.
