34 fast-charging stations to electrify Trans-Canada Highway

A network of 34 fast-charging stations, designed to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in Canada, will soon rise along the Trans-Canada Highway thanks to a private public initiative supported by eCAMION, Leclanché North America, SGEM, and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).

Considered as the largest EV infrastructure "to be deployed at one time anywhere in the world" connecting approximately 3,000 kilometers, the project entails an investment of CAD $17.3 million (USD $13.6 million) and is being partially funded by a CAD $8.0 million (USD $6.2 million) repayable contribution from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) under the Canadian Energy Innovation Program.

It is supported by an investment from North American energy storage solutions companies eCAMION and Leclanché and Switzerland-based independent power producer SGEM.

One hundred two charging units capable of charging vehicles in 20 minutes are set to be installed at the 34 stations, spaced approximately 100 kilometers apart along the Highway.

In addition, each charging station can be connected to a renewable energy source such as solar or wind to facilitate 100-percent emission-free driving.

The project, scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2019, will be managed by FAST Charge Inc.

FAST Charge Inc., a Toronto-based joint venture by eCAMION and Leclanché, also aims to further expand the implementation of EV charging systems across North America.
