Kuwait’s largest petrol station illuminated using LEDs

Kuwait Petroleum International has taken a major step in the European energy market by opening its first ever motorway-based site in Luxembourg, which is also its largest station worldwide. The service station is located in Capellen, Luxembourg - on the busy trans-European E25 motorway close to the border with Belgium, and not far from borders with Germany, France and the Netherlands.

This station is widely acknowledged as the third largest motorway site in the world, and is the largest station run by Q8. This 7-acre site includes 3 canopies with 41 brand new fuel pumps; 28 dispensers for trucks, 11 for cars and 2 for LPG. The site will serve over 100 million liters of fuel each year, which is equivalent to four customers filling their tanks every minute of every day. Each pump will process around 25,000 transactions a year and the site expects to welcome over a million customers each year. The petrol station will be operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The installation at this former Texaco site - which now flies the Q8 flag - involved replacing existing metal halide lighting with Bever Innovation’s Luci Series LED Under Canopy Illumination. The whole re-branding process at the station only took 85 hours to complete, which can be partly attributed to the ease with which LED fixtures in the Luci Series can be installed.

LED offers major savings

Major savings were realized by installing LED lighting at this site. Not only in terms of energy consumption but also in terms of lower CO². After 50 fixtures from the Luci Series were installed under the car and truck canopy, CO² emissions dropped by over 85%.

In terms of energy consumption, the old Mini 300 luminaires used over 60,000kWh per year in the original set-up. After the installation of Luci LED fittings, energy consumption is thought to average around 12,000 kWh a year. The Luci Series has thus reduced the energy consumption by a stunning 80%!

Kuwait switches to LED

Kuwait Petroleum is continuously looking to improve energy-efficiency at its stations because it recognizes the need for environmentally friendly operations. In order to drastically reduce energy consumption at its stations, Kuwait Petroleum initially decided to switch to LED lighting a few years ago.

This involved establishing a pilot project for optimizing energy consumption and reducing CO2 emissions. Conventional metal halide lighting at the test site was replaced by sustainable and energy-efficient LED canopy lighting, which helped to realize energy savings of at least 75% in a very short time-frame. After the trial period, Kuwait Petroleum asked Bever Innovation to supply LED canopy light from its Luci Series.

As part of the ‘Kuwait Petroleum Energy Efficiency Program’, Q8 decided to install the Luci Series at 263 petrol stations in Belgium and Luxembourg. Existing metal halide fixtures were replaced with LED, which resulted in major energy savings at each station.

Improved safety with intelligent dimming

Major energy savings and a lifespan of over 20 years were not the only reasons why Kuwait Petroleum switched to the Luci Series of LED fixtures.

The company places great emphasis on making customers feel safe when using its (unmanned) stations. As a result, LED lighting was the perfect addition to its principle of 24-hour security. When the Luci Series detects movement, it gradually changes from dimmed to full power. This gives customers enough light when filling
their vehicles and also creates a pleasant visual effect.

When the system no longer detects movement, the LED fixture gradually returns to dimmed light after a few minutes. When LED canopy lighting is in dimmed mode, it still offers enough light to create aesthetically pleasing fuel stations which are safe for all visitors.
