Discount fuel retailer Gull has opened its first site in South Island, south of Oamaru. The company expects, according to Gull NZ general manager Dave Bodger. to help pulling prices down among competitors in North Otago.

"Following that and further north of these initial two fuel service stations we own one further station, with agreements to develop and lease in place or close to finalization for four others with several other good conversations happening for other fuel service stations in other areas," Bodger said.

Sites in the pipeline will open in 12 to 18 months in Christchurch's central city and suburbs. After the initial six are opened, Gull will roll out one or two unmmaned station each year for about $1 million each excluding land cost.

Gull new fuel stations will "increase competition in the South Island, which is a region which has been missing out on the type of price competition that's prevalent in the North Island due to Gull being a low cost brand," fuel spokesman mark Stockdale said.

Gull was acquired by Caltex Australia two years ago.
