Amazon is planning to have customers to check out in its Amazon Go convenience stores using accounts linked to imprints of their hand veins, reports USA Today. According to the media outlet, the e-commerce giant recently filed for a new patent for veing scanning technology.

Amazon might intend to roll out the vein scanners technology at its point-of-sale system to its 10 Amazon Go stores, surmises the newspaper.

Amazon’s biometric scanners would index consumers by capturing two images of their hands: the first snapshot would detail the unique wrinkle pattern of a user’s palm, and the second scan would use infrared light to record “deeper characteristics such as veins.”

In-store artificial intelligence and camera systems would identify and charge customers by matching their account information to their biometric data. The system would also track when shoppers take items off the shelf to trigger an automatic replenishment alert.

Amazon noted in its patent application that vein scanning technology would offer shoppers a streamlined and more secure checkout process.

In September this year, it was reported that Amazon was planning to install biometric scanners in its Whole Foods supermarkets.
