A total of 83 hydrogen filling stations started operating worldwide in 2019, according to H2stations.org’s twelfth annual evaluation report. Out of these number, 36 were rolled out in Europe, 38 in Asia, 8 in North America and one in the Arabic peninsula.

432 hydrogen filling stations were in operation worldwide by the end of 2019 - 330 of which were publicly accessible filling sites. This means that the number of hydrogen public filling stations has more than quadrupled since 2015. Currently, there are 226 new filling stations for fuel cell vehicles planned at specific locations.

In 2019, Asia lead the segment with 178 hydrogen filling stations operating by the end of the year, with 114 sites in Japan, 33 in Korea and 27 in China. Chinese filling stations serve almost exclusively to refuel buses or trucks fleet operators. Korea is set to the most ambitious growth in the short term, with over 40 planned filling stations for cars and buses.

In Europe, there were a total of 177 hydrogen filling stations at the end of 2019, being Germany (87 sites) and France (26 sites) the main actors. The French market, with 34 planned filling stations, and the Dutch market, with 21 new filling stations currently in concrete planning, are expected to be the most dynamic for further expansion. Switzerland has 4 filling stations in operation and 6 more are firmly planned in the short-term.

In 2018, 48 hydrogen filling stations went online worldwide. The largest number of public filling stations for fuel cell vehicles at that time was in Japan (96), followed by Germany (60) and the United States (42).
