The Spanish Government has established in the new draft Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition that fuel stations with annual sales of petrol and diesel in 2019 in excess of 5 million litres will have to install electric recharging infrastructure.

The norm also establishes that recharging points must have a charging capacity of 50 kW or more and that they should be active within a period of 27 months from the introduction of the bill.

The Government estimates that the requirement to install electric recharging points in approximately 10% of the country's fuel stations, totalling around 1,105 sites, will cost the sector 44 million euros. According to the report, the average cost per recharging point would be around 40,000 euros.

In provinces, regions or islands where there is no fuel station with an aggregate annual volume of fuel sales  equal to or higher than 5 million litres, major stations that jointly or individually reach at least 10% of total annual sales in 2019 in that geographical area, will install at least one electric recharging point in each site.

As from 2021, new fuel stations or those that undertake a reform of their installation that requires a revision of the administrative title will be required to install at least one recharging point regardless of the aggregate annual volume of sales.
