English Español PetrolPlaza Talks #7: Convenience & Gas Stations in Latin America

The seventh episode of PetrolPlaza Talks brought together ATIO Group, Barcos & Rodados and Onexpo Nacional to discuss the development of the convenience and store segment at Latin American service stations.

Last update:

With an excellent panel formed by Pablo Gualdi (CEO of ATIO Group), Roberto Díaz de León (President of Onexpo Nacional and CEO of Combured) and Carmela Pomata Crosa (Mark. Manager of Barcos & Rodados), PetrolPlaza Talks #7 covered the transition from traditional gas station to multi-service station with a wide offer of food, beverages and products.

According to a study by KPMG, within 10 years the global service station business will reach $US 274 billion. In the forecourt of the future, fuel will account for only 20% of revenues, while the c-store, restaurant, café, lockers and other services will account for 70% of the business. In the session we explore how the retail segment is progressing in Latin America.

In Mexico, the number of gas stations with convenience stores accounts for 49%, according to Roberto Díaz de León. National and international brands such as Oxxo, 7-Eleven and Circle K are the leaders in the convenience store and gas station segment. Location, programmes and high control are key factors for these units.

One Latin operator that understood the value of offering quality shops and food services is Paraguay's Barcos y Rodados. Eighty-five percent of its 340 service stations have a Rapidito shop. The pandemic has boosted its Auto Rapidito concept – a drive-thru model that adapts to customers' needs. Carmela Pomata Crosa talked to us about the different types of shop and the services they offer.

In the transition from gas station to modern service station, a key part is the development and implementation of technology. As a supplier, ATIO Group has been heavily involved in the growth of new payment methods, loyalty programs and promotion management. Pablo Gualdi also gave his views on the state of the business in the continent.
