7-Eleven tests self-driving delivery robots in Los Angeles

The retailer is quietly piloting the new autonomous service through its partnership with Serve Robotics for Slurpees delivery to customers.

7-Eleven has been testing autonomous robots for delivery in the city of Los Angeles for some time now. The retailer has partnered with Serve Robotics to deploy the pilot project after its venture subsidiary, 7-Ventures, supported the supplier with a $13 million investment in 2021.

According to a report by Business Insider, the robots were first spotted by journalist Matt Newberg. The manufacturer confirmed that the autonomous service has been active “for some weeks”.

The chain has deployed the self-driving robot fleet to deliver some of its most iconic foods and snacks, such as Slurpee beverages. All robots are AI-commanded and programmed to ensure safety transportation of products, for example by slowing down on rough terrain.

Serve Robotics also mentioned plans to expand its fleet of robots on a national level through partnership with companies such as 7-Eleven. The service is only available in selected locations, not yed made public and via the firm’s 7Now app.
