English Español Spain: First ‘low cost’ service station in Mallorca

The Spanish island Mallorca now has its first ‘low cost’ service station after the opening of Buga 2000 in Son Bugadelles.

Last update:

The retailing company has set as their business goal the selling of each litre of fuel at between six and ten cents of a euro cheaper than the rest of the gas stations. The 24-hour self-service station accepts payments by cash or card at the dispensaries.

The service station’s goal of offering lower prices to motorists suffered a setback only hours after it first opened. The local gas stations dropped their prices, with the nearest competitor – only 200 metres away – matching the new station’s prices, reports UH Noticias.

‘Low cost’ service stations have only recently appeared in Spain. The leading fuel distributors have generally criticized the automated stations for providing inferior quality fuel; while drivers are concerned about the lack of security, reduced fuel options, lack of consumer protection, and the generation of unemployment, according to 20 Minutos.

A month ago BP published a fuel consumption study proving that their new fuel could outlast a vehicle with ‘low cost’ fuel by 56 kilometres, while being atmospherically cleaner.
