High-tech security system to tackle Detroit gas station crime

Detroit looks to improve safety around gas stations with the development of a high-tech system that will reduce crime rates at refueling areas.

Mike Duggan, Mayor of Detroit, spoke of countering shootings and carjackings at the city´s gas stations, particularly during night time, by installing high-tech security systems which include exterior cameras and lights, and a quick link to a law enforcement center.

"We want to use technology to fight this and make gas stations zones of safety," said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan at last week's Techonomy Detroit conference. "The response from gas station owners is very positive."

Duggan expressed concern over an escalation in crime at gas stations, and said owners had signaled security as one of their major issues, reported Crain´s Detroit Business.

"The mayor and the gas station owners are on the same page as far as improving safety, and we are working toward an effective solution that works for our business owners, as well as the city of Detroit and the community," the mayor's office said via email, according to Crain.

Although general crime as decreased in Detroit over the last seven years, including carjackings, customers and gas stations owners have a sense of insecurity which the city hopes to tackle with this new initiative.
