A hydrogen filling station that would serve boats and private vehicles, the first of its kind in the world, may soon be built at San Francisco Port’s Pier 54, reports San Francisco Examiner.

The $5 million project, which aims to develop a zero-emissions ferry service to the San Francisco Bay, has received interest from Steven Brooks of Retail Energy Now and Jonathan Avila of StratosFuel.

The Port will only act as the landlord and won’t build the station.  It has provided a letter of support of the pier project though to assist those applying to receive a grant from the California Energy Commission in order to finance their possible participation in the project.

“The Port of San Francisco enthusiastically supports the creation of an intermodal hydrogen fueling station on Port property,” said Elaine Forbes, interim executive director of the Port.

Currently, there are 20 hydrogen stations but none of which is located in San Francisco.

“The proximity of Port property to the high population density of San Francisco would make a Port-based hydrogen station valuable in many respects,” added Forbes.

There are 331 hydrogen fuel cell car owners in California. The number is predicted to increase as carmakers are each expected to have their own hydrogen fuel cell model within the next five years.
