English Español Almost 1,000 non-Pemex gas stations already active in Mexico

After opening the fuel market to foreign operators six months ago, Mexico already has 946 gas stations that operate under a brand different to Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

New data produced by the Regulating Commission of Energy shows that after six months 7.8% of the almost 12,000 service stations in Mexico are selling fuel under new brands, providing Mexican drivers an alternative to the classic Pemex stations, reports Vanguardia.

Currently, there are seven new brands in the Mexican fuel retailing market, according to the commission: OxxoGas, Petro-7, Hidrosina, Eco Gasolineras, Nexum, La Gas, and Combured. A number of other gas stations operators have announced plans to enter the recently liberalized Mexican market.

“There are a growing number of gas stations that are changing their image, the services they offer, their loyalty rewards; some are even handing out discounts,” said Guillermo García Alcocer, President of the commission.

OxxoGas has taken the lead of the new fuel retailers by rolling out a network of around 300 gas stations spread throughout 10 states of Mexico. They are followed by Petro-7, a subsidiary of 7-Eleven specially made to fuel the Mexican market, which now has over 200 fuel stations in the country.

The third largest brand of gas stations other than Pemex is Hidrosina with some 200 gas stations, according to its website.
