Fiji's fuel retailers to tackle plastic bag usage
The Fiji Fuel Retailers Association is preparing to introduce a 10 cent surcharge for single use plastic bags.
From August 1, seventy-five gas stations in Fiji will start charging 10 cents for each single use plastic bag to aid the government´s national budget announcement, reports Fiji´s The Sun.
Around 4 million single use plastic bags are used as convenience stores in gas stations every year, according to John Philip, Secretary for the Fiji Fuel Retailers Association (FFRA).
“Convenience stores located at the seventy-five fuel service stations will introduce a social change campaign to inspire Fijians to utilise personal and reusable bags when shopping,” said Philp.
The FFRA will go a step further by encouraging all its members to switch to biodegradable plastics bags for shoppers.
