Shell has signed a memorandum of agreement with QEV Philippines for the deployment of the first network of fast EV charging infrastructure in the Pacific country, reports The Manila Times.

According to the agreement the first 10 new installations will be finished by December 2017. Multinational company ABB Group will supply the charging posts – a Swiss multinational company specializing in robotics power and automation technology areas.

“Electric vehicles have been around in the country since 2008. The country started with electric jeepneys that plied the Makati Green Route back in the industry’s inception,” said QEV, a joint venture between the Philippines' Endika Aboitiz and Spain's Enrique Bañuelos.

Jeepneys are the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. They are known for their crowded seating and kitsch decorations, which have become a ubiquitous symbol of Philippine culture and art.

By joining forces with a world-known brand such as Shell, QEV is hoping to boost the growth of the EV market. The Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) has a target of one million electric vehicles on the road by 2020.

Shell has positioned itself as one of the most ‘open-minded’ oil companies when it comes to including EV infrastructure at its forecourts. The company is already running pilot programs with charging points in the UK and the Netherlands.

Last June the fuel retailing company opened its 1,000th service station in the Philippines.
