The Chinese start-up aims to open 5,000 outlets next year and eyes Hong Kong and other Asian countries to experiment with the Amazon staffless store concept.

South Korea and Malaysia may have the 24/7 stores by second quarter of 2018.

In addition, BingoBox chief executive and founder Chen Zilin does not discount the possibility of opening stores in Europe, where most shops are closed at night.

Inside a BingoBox store, products have designated bar codes, which are scanned on a checkout counter and paid using mobile wallets such as Alipay and WeChat Pay.

The stores are equipped with CCTV cameras and built-in technology to prevent theft.
