USA: Federal agents raid 100 7-Eleven stores for illegal workers

Donald Trump takes action against illegal convenience store workers as the ICE targets 7-Eleven.

Last update:

As the sun was coming out on Wednesday morning, federal immigration agents carried out registrations at 98 7-Eleven convenience stores 17 states and the District of Columbia targeting illegal immigrants working.

In what has been described as the largest operation against a single employer under Donald Trump’s presidency, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents carried out audits and interviews that saw 21 people arrested on suspicion of being in the U.S. illegally, reports the New York Times.

“Today’s actions send a strong message to U.S. businesses that hire and employ an illegal workforce: ICE will enforce the law, and if you are found to be breaking the law, you will be held accountable,” acting ICE Director Thomas D. Homan said in a statement.

In a statement, 7-Eleven Inc., the largest convenience store chain in the U.S., said that its franchises belong to independent business owners that are solely responsible for their hiring practices.

The operation is seen as a message from the Trump administration to retailers and other employers about the new, tough stance on illegal immigration as more funds have been channelled into the ICE and other agencies.
