London police and Toyota eye forming world’s largest fleet of fuel cell police cars

The Toyota Mirai cars, equipped to work for overt and covert police response, will have access to five hydrogen filling stations across the capital – a number that’s set to increase in the months and years ahead, according to Toyota.

The cars’ distinctive livery will give more visibility for hydrogen powered cars and will highlight London’s effort to become a zero-carbon city.

“We are delighted to have taken delivery of 11 of these cars to support policing in London. They are our first entirely zero emission response vehicles and this is an exciting development for us,” said Met Commander Neil Jerome.

The Met’s fuel cell vehicle fleet project has received grant funding from the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (FCHJU). FCHJU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, Hydrogen Europe, and the New European Research Grouping on Fuel Cells and Energy.
