The Shell gas stations operator for numerous countries in Africa is testing the new payment method in 52 stations across Uganda, with most of them around the area of Kampala, reported The Observer.

Pump attendants will guide customers through the transaction process of mobile payments, with no additional costs applied on these operations.

"We are looking for ways to add convenience for our customers. We are confident that, together with MTN, we shall remain at the forefront of the industry and offer customers a convenient payment tool at our service stations,” said Hans Paulsen, Managing Director a Vivo Energy.

Vivo Energy operates 120 Shell-branded service stations in Uganda. The mobile payment system will be expanded to all of these based on the success of its initial campaign.

MTN chief executive officer Brian Gouldie said: “Our partnership with Vivo Energy offers us the opportunity to extend our proposition for motorists at Shell service stations who also have direct access to our growing network of agents.”

MTN is a South Africa-based multinational mobile telecommunications company, with over 10 million subscribers in Uganda – 7.3 million of them registered mobile money users.
