Congresswoman Cheri Bustos of Illinois is sponsoring the Refueling Assistance Act which would require gas stations to provide an alert system that would let a disabled person call the attendant’s attention, thereby facilitating gas refuelling, reported Omaha-based wowt.com.

Currently, the only option available for people with disabilities is to honk their horn but this system is not always effective.

The proposed legislation, which has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, has already received support from Congressman Dave Loebsack of Iowa.

Loebsack is co-sponsoring the bill to address concerns of a constituent who has been advocating for the disabled.

Bustos is expecting to receive more support from other legislators.

“This isn't unique to the congressional district I serve. This isn't unique to the Midwest. This isn't unique to any one portion of the United States. This is an issue that can help people all over the country," Bustos said.
