New Jersey's gas stations prepare for future hurricanes

Through a $7 million program from the federal program, New Jersey's gas stations are preparing for power outages caused by storms.

Last update:

With hurricane Joaquin creeping up the East Coast, 36 New Jersey gas stations have installed backup power generators or hook-ups to portable generators to stay open during and after the storm, reported nj.com.

However, a further 107 gas stations approved for the plan are still waiting to complete their installations, with reported delays application and permit processes.

"They are not all in place yet," said Sal Risalvato, executive director of the New Jersey Gasoline, Convenience Store and Automotive Association.

The backup power programme comes on the back of the severe problems that followed hurricane Sandy in 2012, which left gas stations with no power for days and drivers in desperate need for fuel.
