Europe’s largest terminal opens new LNG truck hub
The United Kingdom’s Isle of Grain Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal, the largest in Europe, has recently opened a facility for road tankers that will transport gas for commercial and industrial use in the UK and across Europe, reported lngworldshipping.com.
The National Grid-owned terminal has been equipped with 36 truck-loading slots, but there are plans to double the number of bays to four when the demand arises.
The terminal has a storage capacity of 15 million tons of gas per year and can supply 20% of UK’s gas needs, reported energylivenews.com.
Flogas and Calor LNG were the first LNG suppliers to load up on Grain.
“There is a significant amount of world-wide LNG available to meet UK and global gas demand. This, together with the inherent environmental benefits of using LNG compared to diesel for example, makes a compelling case for LNG as a fuel.” said Simon Culkin, Importation Terminal Manager at Grain LNG, who considered the truck hub as a key milestone for the terminal.
A proof to LNG global demand was seen from BP’s commitment to supply up to one million tons of LNG to China Huadian Corporation in the next 20 years. The £10bn deal was signed during the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping in the UK in October.
