Portland shuts the door on fossil fuel operators, bans new gas stations

Portland's city council has banned the construction of any new gas stations in the name of global warming.

Last update:

The resolution prevents the constructions of new facilities to transport or store oil, gasoline, coal and natural gas within the limits of Portland, Oregon, as they attempt to discourage any transportation of fossil fuels across the city.

“Our work is not done yet, but we feel that with this unanimous vote, there is a good chance that the codifying language is going to be strong and signal to the fossil fuel industry that Portland is not open for their business,” Adriana Voss-Andreae, director of a local environmental group, told news site Climate Progress.

Environmentalists have described this as a huge victory and consider it an effective deterrent for fossil fuel companies looking to invest in Portland.
