Dubai powers EVs with installation charging points

To promote the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has installed a number of new charging points.

Last update:

By adopting the latest EV charging technology, which reduces the charging time from hours to minutes, Dubai hopes to convince motorists to make the switch to “green” and spearhead an alternative source of energy for transportation.

Dewa will maximise customer choice by installing three different types of charging points: Fast-charging stations that take between 20 to 40 minutes for service stations; medium-speed which takes from 2 to 4 hours, to be installed in shopping malls, parks and office buildings; and the slow-charging stations for homes.

"The green charger initiative will ... effectively contribute to boosting the spread of electric cars in Dubai, which will decrease the carbon footprint of the emirate," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of the Dewa.

Dewa had already signalled its ambitions concerning EVS by announcing five months ago that they would install 100 EV charging stations in Dubai by the end of 2015.
