California: First of 19 hydrogen fuelling stations starts construction

A new hydrogen fuelling station will be added to an existing gas station in Campbell, California, as the Silicon Valley area continues to expand its alternative fuel options.

Last update:

The hydrogen station is a project of First Element Fuel, which received a $26 million grant from the California Energy Commission to install fuelling stations for fuel cell vehicles across the state.

First Element Fuel plans to construct 19 hydrogen stations in California as they try to promote the use of fuel cell vehicles in an environmentally friendly area of the country, reported the San Jose Mercury News.

Shane Stephens, cofounder of Firs Element Fuel, commented on why the company had chosen Campbell and other Bay Area cities for the stations: "Think of where the Prius, Hybrid and Tesla drivers are. They are willing to spend a little money to be a little greener."

The Campbell station, the first of the 19 planned hydrogen stations, will be operating in March.
