Kuwait: Retailer to build 100 solar-powered gas stations

The Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) has announced plans to build more than 100 solar-powered gas stations in the Gulf country.

The announcement was made by Ahmad Al-Jimaz, a representative of the KNPC, while at the third meeting of the Renewable Energy Resources Development Commission.

Al-Jimaz said the Kuwaiti oil company will soon build over 100 fuel stations partly powered by photovoltaic cells, reports the Arab Times.  

“The oil sector has presented an initiative to create a solar power plant to cover 15 per cent of the needs of the oil sector from electric energy by 2020,” said Al-Jimaz.

Last month, the KNPC announced total investment in projects - including a new refinery and a clean fuels project – will reach $42 billion by 2022.

After offloading a number of sites through in privatization process, the KNPC currently owns and operates 37 gas stations in Kuwait.
